Interesting Facts About The Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands has 3 islands – Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac. As the name implies, the Grand Cayman is the largest island with an estimated population of 52,500. On the other hand, Cayman Brac has a population of about 1,200 while Little Cayman has 120 permanent residents only.

The name “Cayman” was derived from the Carib word “Camanas”, which means “crocodile”.  It was originally called “Las Tortugas”, Spanish word for “turtles” by Columbus. Brac, on the other hand, was named for the limestone bluff found in the middle of the island.

The island’s largest festival is the Pirates Week Festival. It is being held each fall as a reminder of the legendary pirate occupation during the 18th century, which the tales of treasure caches left behind by Neal Walker, Henry Morgan, and Edward Blackbeard.

The Cayman Island dollar or CI$, which is equivalent to US$1.25, is its own currency. Also, it has its own beer brewery that brews Caybrew, Caybrew Light, Ironshore Bock, and White Tip.

One of the famous attractions in these islands is the Cayman Island Turtle Farm, which is home to 16,000 sea turtles at any given time. Moreover, visitors can actually choose from over 159 dive sites. Be reminded though that they have a law that prohibits topless sunbathing.
