How Osteopathic Treatment Came About

Osteopathy
Osteopathic medicine is a unique form of medical care. It was founded on the philosophy that all body systems are dependent on one another for good health. It was Andrew Taylor Still who developed this philosophy in 1874. He actually pioneered the concept of wellness and recognized the benefits of treating illness in the context of the whole body.

Philosophy Becomes Practice

His research as well as clinical observations led him to believe that the musculoskeletal system is playing a very important role in health and disease. He has concluded that the body contained all the elements necessary in order to maintain health, when they are properly stimulated.

Dr. Still strongly believed that by correcting problems in the body structure with the use of manual techniques which is now known as osteopathic manipulative medicine or OMM, the ability of the body to function as well as heal itself could certainly be improved. Also, he promoted the idea of preventive medicine. Moreover, he endorsed the philosophy that physicians must focus on treating the whole patient rather than just the illness.

These beliefs have indeed formed the basis of a new medical approach which is osteopathic medicine. With this philosophy, he actually opened the very first school of osteopathic medicine in 1892 in Kirksville, MO.
