Today, nursing is a very popular field of study. It is also among the most in demand professions nowadays. It took plenty of years for such career to gain credit and recognition. It was only in the 19th century that nursing was given true value.
Nurses Who Changed The Field Of Nursing
- Florence Nightingale – She is the founder of today’s nursing profession. She studied nursing in Germany in 1851. During the Crimean War, she helped in caring for wounded and dying soldiers. She became a huge advocate for fixing up and cleaning hospitals. Also, she used mathematical skills to come up with great ways on how to look at medical data which was collected. With her ideas, the Army Medical College was founded.
- Clara Barton – She is the founder of the American Red Cross. She created the Red Cross because of her great experiences during the Civil War wherein she tended to wounded soldiers.
- Mary Mahoney – She is the first African American nurse during her time.
- Mary Breckinridge – She is well-known for creating the Frontier Nursing Service. This service aims of providing health care to poor people and to those who lived in very remote areas throughout Kentucky. She also created a visiting nurses program that helped many women to be trained as proper midwives and nurses.
- Edith Cavell – She modernize the nursing profession in Belgium. When war begin in 1914, she helped wounded soldiers even when the Germans posted that anyone who helps French or English soldiers will be punished. Germans arrested her in 1915. Despite having a lawyer explaining that she acted out of compassion to assist the needy, Cavell was still charged with treason. On October 12, 1915, she was executed.
