The Usual Causes Of Stampedes In Large Events

Every year, a large number of people around the world die from stampedes. These stampedes can occur at concerts, sports events, and basically, in any place where a large crowd is gathered.

Why Stampedes Happen

A stampede can occur due to one or a combination of the following factors:

Broadcasted or shared information – A piece of information, such as cancellation of the main act or sporting event, which is broadcasted or simply shared among all the people, can easily cause a stampede. In events, information has many forms. It includes various means of communication, the sights and sounds that influence group perceptions, public address announcements, training and actions of personnel, signs, and even ticketing, which can easily initiate rapid group movement.

Force
– This type of forces is mainly due to pushing, and the domino effect of people leaning against each other.  In a crowd, it does not take many people to produce deadly force. If you have ever been in such situation, you will know that it will be difficult for you to keep your feet on the ground and control where you move. In such instances, what you can do is try to keep your balance. In stampedes, crowd forces can reach levels that are almost impossible to resist or control.

Time – Event scheduling and facility processing rates can also cause a stampede. A basic illustration of how this factor works is that there is a more gradual and lighter density arrival process prior to an event, compared to the rapid egress and heavy crowd densities after it. However, studies show that the longer the gap between two similar events, the larger the size and density of crowd force it would be.
