Banks are also one of the oldest financial institutions and systems in the world. In fact, the oldest bank, which is still operational today, was established in 1472.

1. Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena. Also known as BMPS, this financial institution is the oldest surviving bank in the world. It was established in 1472 in Italy by the magistrates of Siena, a city in this country. BMPS has around 2,100 branches in Italy and other areas abroad.

2. Berenberg Bank. Joh. Berenberg, Gossler & Co. KG, or Berenberg Bank, is a multinational investment banking and private banking company based in Hamburg. It was founded by the Berenberg family, originally from Belgium, in 1590. Berenberg Bank is considered the world's oldest merchant bank. Aside from Germany, this bank has branches or offices in the UK, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

3. Sveriges Riksbank. Riksbanken, also known as the Swedish National Bank and the Bank of Sweden, is the central bank of Sweden. It is also the world's oldest central bank and the third oldest bank in the world that is still in operation. This bank was formally established in Sweden in 1668.
