The Two Oldest Working Cars In The World Today

oldest working cars in the world
Karl Benz is considered the true original inventor of the automobile. He was the first to develop a petrol- or gasoline-powered automobile in 1886 in Germany.

However, even before Karl Benz invented the gasoline-powered automobile, there is an older type that was developed which is still functional even today. Read about this car and another one that are considered the oldest functional vehicles today below.

The De Dion Bouton Et Trapardoux Dos-A-Dos Steam Runabout

In 1884, French Comte de Dion’s pride was a four-wheeled contraption grandly named La Marquise. This vehicle was among the automobiles with ‘modern’ car attributes such as four wheels and four-passenger (back-to-back) seating. However, instead of a steering wheel, it had a tiller.  This vehicle is now more than 130 years old, making it the oldest still operating motor car in the world.

Roberts Electric

The 1896 Roberts Electric is the oldest running electric car in the world today. In 1896, Charles Roberts, the vehicle’s creator, had his friend, renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, build him a stable. The stable soon became home to a carriage that can’t be pulled by horses, yet it moved. The car was powered by a twin two-horsepower, 60-volt motors in the back, carried in front by the rear axle. Since they were meshed rigidly together, they feature a pinion gear on each end of a shaft. With a big gear that drives each rear wheel directly, the vehicle was able to achieve a top speed of around 25mph.
