Top Myths About Martial Arts
Most people acquired their stock knowledge of martial arts from popular culture such as films, TV shows, or cartoons. Because pop culture is the main source of martial arts knowledge of a lot of people, many myths about this sport are quite prevalent. These top myths include the following:
Fighting for minutes at a time. People trained in martial arts are human, too, even the best ones. As such, if their heads and bodies take a lot of hits from their opponents, they simply would not last through a long running physically fight, especially when the participants are highly trained killers. Because of Hollywood and other films or shows glamourizing fights, many think that people trained in martial arts will last for a long a time as she or she trades hits and gets beaten at the same time. In real life though, most street assault fights and violent one on one robberies are won, lost, or over within 3 to 10 seconds.
In street fights, martial arts always win. Thugs, especially when acting with a violent group of punks, can be very rough and violent enough to give even trained and toughened police officers a hard time in a physical battle. As such, while being a Black Belt in some traditional style is better than nothing to help you out in surviving a physical assault, being one doesn’t guarantee a higher percentile of success when confronted by a seriously dangerous and strong psycho trying to hurt you.
You can get the best martial arts training from military divisions such as Navy, SEALS, or Special Forces. This may be true in the old days (during WWI and WWII) but today, most military training barely give lip service to unarmed hand-to-hand combat training. Modern military is now designed to use firepower weapons. As such, there are only some in the military who are now good or great in martial arts and they may have gotten their training prior to enlisting or outside of their duty.
